question about CML & glivec

Hi there,

I'm new to this CML support group. I was wondering if anyone had information about Glivec & CML in relation to male fertility? E.g. what exactly does CML and/or Glivec do to the sperm and how does it reduce fertility? Also, is there a (higher?) chance of any chromosomal/genetic/etc abnormalities in a child where one of the parents have CML?

Thank you. :)

Hi,

I will relay to you what Dr. Druker (who developed Gleevec and continues with extensive research) has written to patients. He does not feel that a male taking Gleevec is a problem as far as fathering a child....I am not sure if he thinks that it reduces fertility. There are a lot of normal Gleevec babies out there (fathers with CML). CML itself is not an inherited problem and does not cause any offspring problem....the problem is with the drugs we take for treatment (for the female). I hope you get other responses from CML Dads.

Hi

I have been taking glivec (600 daily) since dx (Mar 04).
Here in Australia I had some sperm banked before I started any treatment (pre Mar 04). This was on the advice of my specialist. I supposed they are taking a conservative approach.

The cost of storage is fairly minminal in Aust - about $150 per year.

FYI - we are expecting in Feb 2006 - our first.

Thanks

Hi

To put your mind at rest I was disgnosed in Oct '03, been on 600mg more or less since that, we had a baby boy September '05 and another on the way in July this year. Except of one ear infection our son has had no health problems and has passed his check ups with flying colours. I checked with Novartis through my GP before having him and they said there is no problem if the CML is on the male side.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I started on Glivec around 6 weeks ago and banked some sperm as a precautionary measure. However, I've received plenty of advice that the problems occur mainly on the female side (if the female is on G) and there should be no problems if the male is on it. It is possible that Glivec can lower the sperm count and motility so I'm going to have that monitored throughout my treatment - should be quite interesting.

Cheers
