Good news - NHS England have reversed their initial refusal to fund second transplants

Some of you may be aware that NHS England is now refusing to fund second transplants for those patients who relapse. There is currently a petition on Change.org that is asking for funding for a second SCT in a particular case. This woman, who is a patient at Kings, is having to raise funds for her own SCT, so you can either donate or just sign the petition.  Either way you will help raise awareness about this latest NHS cut,  although as very few people need a second SCT in any one year -, it is not going to save much money! The times we live in!

BTW: there are some rather ignorant and deeply prejudiced comments abut why NHS England has had to make cuts to NHS services on the fundraisers page - best to ignore such rhetoric but it is rather depressing in the circumstances.

Yes, this happened to a 13 yr old boy in Bristol a few months back. His elder brother was a perfect match but he had already had one transplant so was refused the second despite his young age. His aunt started a crowdfunding page and enough was raised for the transplant to be done - and to date it is successful. I do hope the same happens with Sasha who has 2 small children.

Much better new for Sasha. Just had an email from Change and the hospital are booking her in for a BMT in 4 weeks. She is still around £40k short of the £130k but whether she will need to raise the full amount I don't know.

Best,

Chrissie

NHS England have just put up a media release on their website announcing they have reversed their decision to withdraw funding for second allogeneic stem cell transplants. There were some news reports last week about their decision which are now confirmed and the media release contains a link to the detailed policy document that specifies the conditions a patient must meet to qualify for the procedure.

The number of CML patients affected is tiny (see section 4 of the policy document) but for those either waiting for or likely to require this procedure in the future this is very welcome news.

We would like to thank the team at the Anthony Nolan charity who have lead the campaign for the original decision to be overturned.

Hi Sandy,

Just had a mail from Change.org expanding on the news that NHS England have reversed their decision re. second transplants.Apparently 167,000 people signed the petition and donations were such that Sacha has, or is about to commence her treatment as a private patient for the second attempt;we all wish her well.

Regards

John
