Blast suspect on CBC

Categories:

Hello!

In the past 2 years I've been feeling dizzy and tired easily. Moreover, I keep getting flu, sorethroat every month or 2 months and fever.

Last week I also had gastric problem and severe abdominal pain and severe diarrhea with fever (probably bcs of dehydration).

Since I got recurring infection i took several blood tests.

I did CBC test 3 times in Jan 2017, Sept 2017, and April 2018.

Most of the results are normal, except for the WBC count and  ESR

1st cbc:

Hb 13.5 (normal 11.7 - 15.5 g/dL)

WBC 5.3 (normal 3.6 - 11 10^3/µL)

Platelet 327 (normal 150 - 440 10^3/µL)

eosinophil 5.6% (normal 2-4%), absolute 0.3

lymphocyte 22.7% (normal 25-40%), absolute 1.19

Note: Blast suspect 0.2%

ESR: 10 (normal 0-20 mm/hr)

2nd cbc:

Hb 14.2 (normal 11.7 - 15.5 g/dL)

WBC 10.2 (normal 3.6 - 11 10^3/µL)

Platelet 329 (normal 150 - 440 10^3/µL)

neutrophil 74.9% (normal 50-70%), absolute 7.63

lymphocyte 16.2% (normal 25-40%), absolute 1.65

Note: HYPER+, Blast suspect 0.3%

ESR: 20 (normal 0-20 mm.hr)

3rd cbc:

Hb 13.4 (normal 11.7 - 15.5 g/dL)

WBC 10 (normal 3.6 - 11 10^3/µL)

Platelet 299 (normal 150 - 440 10^3/µL)

neutrophil 72.7% (normal 50-70%), absolute 7.25

lymphocyte 18.6% (normal 25-40%), absolute 1.85

Note: MACRO+, Blast suspect 0.6%

ESR: 30 (normal 0-20 mm/hr)

Does anyone know whether the flag message "blast suspect" always show on CBC print out?

Is the blast below 1% in peripheral blood insignificant?

I also wonder whether those blasts causing recurring flu.

Thank you.

Regards,

Magic

Hi Magic,

Have you been given a diagnosis from a doctor? Blood counts can be inaccurate by a machine - for example when I was first diagnosed the machine counted over 30% blasts, which was terrible. But it didn’t seem right and a manual count settled on 11%.
