ON gleevec ...H2 antihistamine for GERD vs Proton Pump Inhibitor?

Hello all,

I am wanting to know if it is okay to take an H2 antihistamine instead of a PPI because when I did the PPI my Creatinine shot up.  My kidney clearance ratio also went down.

Please let me know if I am making a big mistake by taking an H2 such as Pepcid.

Many thanks,

Susan

Hi Susan, all TKIs other than imatinib need an acidic stomach to be broken down properly. Imatinib is the only one that doesn’t.

PPIs and H2 agonists work differently, but achieve the same result ... a lower acid stomach. That is fine with imatinib, but do keep it in the back of your mind that if you do ever switch TKI those medicines are an issue.
